These sessions, which I am excited to offer you, have been inspired by and are similar to what the Japanese call “Forest Bathing” or Shinrin-yoku. Shinrin – yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere, or taking in the forest through our senses.
The Japanese have practiced this for years, having discovered the science behind the feeling of walking in nature. A national health programme for forest bathing began to be introduced in Japan in 1982.
These sessions are not for you if you wish to:
- Exercise in order to get fit
- Go hiking
- Go jogging
This is an opportunity to simply be in nature and to connect to nature through our senses. Our sense of sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch and feeling.
We tend to use our sense of sight and hearing the most, so we don’t utilize our other senses as much. However, sometimes we are so preoccupied, our minds being so busy, we may even be listening to music or a podcast on our mobile, and with a tendency to walk fast. So we are unable to fully connect with our surroundings, giving the most minimal attention to what we are seeing and hearing.
It is only when we truly open up fully to our senses, we begin to connect to the natural world in a way that is healing and meaningful to us.
Why Is It Important For Us To Do This?
- A lot of us live in cities
- We spend a lot of time indoors, in our cars, in offices.
- We are spending lots of time looking at our screens, working on computers.
- Checking our phones or other devices, consuming media.
- A lot of us have unhealthy behaviour around new technology. We check our phones, share updates constantly and feel as if we need to be connected constantly to them.
- Cities are fab places to live in the sense that they are full of excitement, culture, entertainment, and energy. However, this can be stressful and when we are too stressed it increases our risk for heart attacks and cancer. Living this way we are more prone to experiencing loneliness, panic attacks, and depression.
The World Health Organisation [WHO] calls stress the health epidemic of the twenty-first century. So it is vitally important that we find ways of managing stress.
